Skin Stress

Stress, anxiety and depression adversely affects our skin too. Stress is a complex matter due to the fact that we all perceive it differently. Studies show that ‘more than 30% of dermatologic disorders are influenced by psychological and psychiatric factors, with some skin diseases being caused or at least exacerbated by chronic stress, by certain personality characteristic whether in isolation or in association with psychological complication.

Understanding the effects of Stress on the Skin

The role of perceived stress has been linked to a wide range of skin issues in the list here below – perhaps you recognize some in yourself, your spouse or children?

  • Scalp: oily, waxy patches and/or flakey scalp (or dandruff),
  • Hands: itchy rash, angry-red patches; tendency to bite nails and cuticles
  • Face: acne, pimples, scaly sections (usually eyelids), rashes
  • Body: Dry or painful rashes (in serious cases, shingles may occur) and troublesome sweating

It is said that stress has greater detrimental effects than the stressful event itself. We are all on a ‘sliding-scale’ when it comes to our reaction to stressors. Our characteristics – inherited or developed, our experiences and our personality all weigh in what each of us perceive as stressful. Females have been demonstrated to show greater perceived stress that males. Sleep deprivation is another much underestimated stressor.

Topical Relief for Skin Stress

Body massage alone decreases stress and anxiety. It lowers the heart rate, relaxes strained muscles, activates the meridian pathways in the body and releases endorphins.

Combine that with the organic curative properties in the Supersalve range of balms, ointments and topical rub formulations and relief is in sight.

Red Alert: exfoliation is vital too otherwise the dead cells on the surface curtail absorption through the skin. Here is a fully ‘au naturale’ body paste that will gently scrub the skin:

 Organic Body Scrub:

2 tablespoons base oil – almond or grapeseed
1 teaspoon ground citrus fruit peel
4 drops each fragrant essential oil of your choice – citrus and sandalwood

Now add the dry ingredients:

2 teaspoons fine oatmeal
3 teaspoons ground almonds
1 pinch ground nutmeg
1 pinch ground cloves
1 teaspoon crushed, dried flower petals

Say goodbye to dead skin cells, and hello to a clean super-soft, glowing skin, ready to absorb nature’s remedy in a salve
